Jayne Kawakami Scholarships for 2019

Who is Jayne Kawakami?

Jayne Kawakami is Bert Kitade's Aunt who has dedicated her life as a High School teacher for 20 years. She always stressed the importance of education and passed that lesson down to her nieces and nephews. She went back to school after marriage and earned her B.S. and Masters in Business Education.

BDL

BDL has become more than a youth basketball league. It has become a second family to many of the former players. They remain close friends, play in the adult league, or are now volunteer coaches.

Most of these former BDL players are now attending college and are finding that paying for their college education can be challenging. To help with the cost of education, Coach Bert and his nephew, Keith Masuda (former BDL coach), have donated monies to start a scholarship fund for former BDL players who are attending college. The scholarships are designated for those who are achieving academic excellence, performing community service and displaying leadership skills and may be in need of some financial assistance for attending college.

Scholarships are for undergraduate college students and will be awarded at the beginning of the calendar year. Evaluation is based upon numerous factors, including: academic honors and recognition, current GPA, community service, leadership experiences and any other relevant accomplishments.

Since we opened up scholarships since 2014, we've given out over $30,000 to 31 applicants.

Eligibility: New Applicants

All students must submit a Scholarship Application before December 31, 2017. To be eligible, a student must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Played in BDL for at least eight (8) seasons.

Enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited junior college, college or university.

Achieved a GPA of 3.00 or better.

Please create your resume as if you were applying to an actual job.

For those who are new, fill out application

For those NOT QUALIFIED, still apply, turn it in, explain why you don't meet qualifications, explain why you should receive scholarship, turn in application and resume.

If you are in need of help in completing any of the requirements, feel free to contact Bert.

Eligibility: Previous Applicants

If you have previously applied, you don't have to turn in the essay again. Please update your resume as if you were applying to an actual job.

An application and a performance evaluation form.

For the evaluation form, include your strengths and weaknesses. Please be honest in your responses. Criticize your weaknesses and explain how you can improve them.

If you are in need of help in completing any of the requirements, feel free to contact Bert.

Attached is a standard form for you to fill out. This assignment acts as a self-evaluation on how you performed on a job or volunteer programmer you have worked. Instead of your supervisor completing the form, you are to evaluate your own performance.

You should be honest in your evaluation of yourself. Give examples in the comment section on why you gave yourself that rating.
